Evaluation of "Unique" Items in Path of Exile

A unique item is an item with a specific name, unique artwork, and a predetermined list of modifiers. Unique items have the same implicit modifier as a normal item of the same type. Today we are sharing with you a very "Unique" item that we found on the POE forums.

Unique items are meant to be less powerful overall than high-level rare items, but offer unique gameplay and allow special character builds to be based around them. 


1) Most unique jewels simply need some redesign at this point. There are so many absolutely useless ones out there. So useless that even the builds that could use them don't.


2) It's also because at the moment having a good belt and having a good abyss jewel isn't hard since they raining from everywhere. With something like 1 abyss every ten maps, abyss belt and jewel would still be very valuable but there would be a lot more space for value and use for others belts.


3) Perhaps that would be true but then everyone would hate that the biggest league mechanic is so rare. Also people would just be more serious about saving all stygian vise bases and crafting those. They would eventually get distributed to basically everyone anyway it just takes a little longer.


4) It's not necessarily power creep just because it's strictly better than something that came before - it had to be better than what was previously good (or even best). For example, it's not "power creep" every time we get a new unique helmet better than Veil of the Night.


Abyss jewels (and/or Stygian Vise) may well be an example of power creep, but it's not because of this bad unique jewel.


5) A lot of unique items got trashed by Abyss jewels and Shelder items indeed. For, example Ming's Heart with -% life and extra phys as chaos is irrelevant when you can get same on weapon with no downside. Good rare shields even surpass Surrender afaik. That Watcher's Eye Jewel can be ridiculous as well.


On the other hand, a lot of uniques need rework. A lot of them have high level requirement that means they are intended for End-game, but completely useless here. I want Icetomb to be OP personally :p Everytime this chest drops I think that it can be so crazy, like even more crazy then Tul's amulet.


6) This won't be how it works.


Assuming one abyss per 10 maps, you run 20 T16 maps, and in doing so get around 3-4 Stygian Belts and 8 jewels. (On average - variance is pretty high because Abyssal Depths drop so many)


Then you actually craft those, using Chaos orbs and/or essences for the belts, and Chaos orbs on the jewels.
